Expresses dissatisfaction, regret, or reproach that one could originally have done so, but in reality it did not turn out that way. It is used with a feeling of regret toward a result that runs counter to expectations, as in 「〜ばよかったものを」. The sentence is sometimes left unfinished at the end, as in 「黙っていればよかったものを」, leaving a lingering sense of dissatisfaction or regret.
If only he had gone to the doctor sooner, but he endured it and it got worse.
If only you had consulted me, I would have helped, so why did you stay silent?
An apology would have settled it, but he stubbornly refused to speak.
A word of apology would have kept things smooth—if only.
