Meaning

Indicates acting while disregarding and ignoring the concern, opposition, or inconvenience of those around. Often carries the speaker's critical viewpoint.

Examples

1. 親の心配をよそに、彼は危険な単独登山に出かけた。 Ignoring his parents' worries, he set off on a dangerous solo climb.
2. 住民の反対をよそに、ダムの建設は強行された。 Despite the residents' opposition, the dam construction was forced through.
3. 周囲の混乱をよそに、彼女は一人冷静に対処していた。 Unaffected by the surrounding chaos, she calmly dealt with the situation alone.
